The Songs:
The tense, long form, and ultimately explosive opening track Stand Down Olympus evokes a world being pulled apart. Its urgent message: topple your oppressors, starting with our own fears and self-doubt. Following that slice of apocalyptic post-rock/psych freak-rock is Float, underscored by the exploratory spirit of textural improvisation and evoking the sweeping, dreamlike sonority of contemporary chamber music. Side B’s opening track King is Rising grounds things in a deep Americana, with woodsy guitars and brushed snare painting imagery of Elvis, the 1960s civil rights movement, and a lost romanticism of what modern North America could be. Lottery Life continues the theme, critiquing the false hope of capitalism while also acting as an allegory for the pitfalls of betting on blind religious affiliations and other groupthink models to save your soul; gambling on false hope as opposed to investing in and taking responsibility for it. The wistful closer Home brings it right there. As chaotic and trying as this world might be, if you can create community with your chosen family and honour the connections and relationships you have and foster, you’re home. In all, Eminent Ghosts is about acceptance, responsibility, and being present—for yourself, the ones you love, and the world at large. These are welcomed hauntings. The ghosts are all the friends, family, and inspirational strangers who imbue the present with a depth and range, and act as reassuring guides towards an uncertain, but supported-for future.
