Parkland / CJ Boyd / Róisín Adams

  • Merge NE Corner of Clark & Poweel Vancouver, BC Canada (map)

The incomparable and captivating CJ Boyd has been touring the world literally nonstop for 10 years, returning at intervals to Vancouver like a rare comet in the night sky. We're really glad to have him back at Merge. Don't miss out, stargazers!

It's also a very special night because experimental pianist/composer Róisín Adams will be opening the night with her Mirror Compositions, and then joining Parkland on keys later in the evening.

$10 (Cash only)

Doors 9pm, music at 9:30pm

Parkland is the constantly-evolving music project of singer/guitarist/producer Rob Malowany. Impassioned, heart-laid-bare lyrics and alt-country underpinnings are stretched and spontaneously reimagined by a shining cast of Vancouver creative improvisers. No two performances are the same.

Bassist, composer, vagabond, CJ Boyd uses low-end loops and voices in order to try and stop time. On perpetual tour since March 2008, movement and stasis are both at the center of his music. Though solo performance takes up the bulk of his time and effort, he also plays in the bands Desert Center, Kurva Choir, Rhonya, and Move. His non-stop travels between North America and Europe have been propelled by vans, cars, trains, buses, planes, and boats, but most of all a commitment to ceaseless discovery and re-invention. His oceanic sounds provide a home for the homeless and journeys to the homebound.

Róisín Adams' Mirror Compositions pushes beyond convention to extract astonishing sounds from the acoustic fringes of the piano. Interacting live with a sonically rich library of short, prepared piano improvisation units she recorded during a residency at Banff Centre for Creativity and Arts, composer/pianist Róisín Adams explores alternative harmonic fields in a conversation between herself and the vast possibilities of extended technique.

An ever-shifting investigation into sound and space, Adams’ compelling electroacoustic environments invite listeners to experience the familiar instrument in an entirely new way.
